 Term 3 Week 10

Wow, it has been a busy term!

We are so excited for the STEM Learning Journeys tomorrow (21st September). Your child should of bought home a note with a time that you are to visit our classroom.

The children have worked extremely hard to get their projects to the stage that they are at. Please ask questions of your child as they explain the process of making their Fairground ride.

This week they will also be completing a speaking and listening task about their STEM project.

The children know when they are to present their speech.

Remember, we will be switching to Connect from the beginning of next term.

Have a wonderful holiday break and we can't wait to see everyone back for Term 4.

Term 3

It has been a busy start back to school for Term 3.

We would like to thank Angela and Ronan for doing such a great job as our Semester One Student Councillors. Congratulations to the new Student Councillors Kabilan and Tahlia, we know you will do an amazing job!

We have begun our Year Level STEM (Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology) projects in class.  The children have been using Mathematics to solve problems centred around their project and we hope to start planning and designing our Fairground rides next week. More information will follow about materials that your child will require in the coming weeks. This STEM project is to be completed at school, however, feel free to discuss the design process with them at home.

This term we have our Athletics Carnival being held during week seven. The children have started to train for their events and will find out in the next few weeks the events that they will be competing in.

Year 4 Excursion

In Week 6, the Year 4 children from Rooms 12, 16 and 19 went on an excursion to  Fremantle. It was a jam packed day that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

We began at the Fremantle Prison, where we were given a tour and learnt all about convict life. We were able to see inside the cells, looked at where the outdoor recreation time was spent and learnt about how the first convicts spent the majority of their time - working!

After the Prison we set off to the Roundhouse on foot and learnt about the history of one of the oldest buildings in Fremantle.

The children were pretty ravenous by this stage so off we went to Cicerellos for lunch. I think this was a highlight for all the children as they were able to enjoy the beautiful views of Fremantle while filling their tummies with delicious food.

We quickly retuned back to the Roundhouse to see the firing of the cannon, before we arrived at our last stop for the day, the Shipwreck Museum. The children went on a scavenger hunt to find certain items to tick off their list and learn all about the Batavia shipwreck.

The return trip back to school was very quiet, with most of the children (and teachers) feeling pretty weary.

 Design and Technology

Last week we tested our house designs, against our chosen natural disaster conditions.

It was an afternoon filled with hope and excitement to see which house could withstand a cyclone, flood, storm or tsunami.

About half of the cyclone houses managed to hold up to the force of our powerful fan.

Two out of the four houses made for floods, managed to stay strong.

Only one tsunami house outlasted Mrs Oliver's huge bucket of water. Congratulations Josephine!

Design and Technology

During Term 1 and Term 2, we have been looking at house designs and why houses may be built differently in different environments, depending on the conditions.

Students chose a natural disaster and then discussed the types of materials that these houses would need to be made from. They drew a house design, the steps they would need to take to build the house, and then a list of materials to be bought from home.

This week, we began making our houses in class. We had to think about the best way to join materials, how to reinforce parts of our house and make changes when things didn't work.

Next week, we hope to test our houses in our chosen natural disaster conditions.

Will they hold up to a cyclone, flood, storm or tsunami?

Super Scientist Term Two

It is that time of the semester again! Super Scientist is back and it is time to start preparing. Students are asked to present a scientific experiment or demonstration using any relevant equipment. It can be based on any science topic and we ask that they show their interest in this topic by demonstrating a clear understanding and depth of their chosen experiment.

The presentation must be no longer than five minutes and no shorter than two minutes. They may choose to use a PowerPoint or chart to assist their explanation of the scientific concept.

Students will also be assessed on their speaking skills such as eye contact, body language and voice projection.

Presentations will be conducted in Week 6, starting on Monday 24th May and therefore there will be no spelling or mental maths homework in Week 5. This will give the students a chance to focus on their presentations.

There will be a timetable provided under the Motivational Work for Term Two in the coming days. We are very excited to see what the students will deliver.

 Welcome back to Term 2!!

We hope all our families had a wonderful holiday break. We are gearing up for a big Term 2 and we have many exciting things happening. If you have not returned your child's Test Book, please send this back to school by Friday, 23 April 2021.

Our ANZAC Assembly will be held on Friday, 23 April 2021. If you have any flowers that you may be able to donate to our wreath, we would kindly appreciate them to be brought to school on Thursday.

We would also like donations of construction materials such as small boxes, string, straws, pop sticks, etc for our Design and Technology projects happening in the next few weeks. More information will come home soon with your child.

This term our focus value is Resilience, with the sub value being Independence. We have set a big challenge to the students now that they are in Year 4, to be more independent.

You can assist this at home by;

* Encouraging them to pack their bags the night before school

* Setting up a homework schedule

* Have them create a timetable highlighting which learning areas they have each day to ensure they have the necessary items ie. library books, USB, good running shoes.
